 State Government

The Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce supports:

Responsible Tax Management by:

Reducing Corporate Income Tax

Reducing corporate income tax rates. In 2006, the latest data available, Minnesota had the 10th highest corporate income tax collections per capita and the 13th highest per $1,000 of personal income. Minnesota's corporate income tax rate is one of the highest in the nation, and the state apportions income to the full extent of the Constitution.

Reduce taxes on individual capital gains by either taxing a lower rate or enacting a capital gain exclusion.

Reestablishing fair LGA Funding

Using LGA, as it was originally intended, to subsidize communities in a means for economic growth, whereas such communities would be unable to financially do so.  The fairness in revenue sharing currently doesn’t exist in its current state.

Balancing the budget without a general fund tax increase

Administrating government with public policy in mind and with priorities that promote economic and social investment without a general fund tax increase. Furthermore, the long-term sustainability and the economic health of the system should serve to benefit all. Guiding principles to ensure sustainable tax and spending policy include "fiscal restraint," "sustainability," "stability," "simplicity" and "prioritization of programs and funding."

Ease of conducting business by:

Ensuring the right to a fair and secret election.

The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) will eliminate the Federal National Labor Relations Board from a union vote. Currently, a union must receive 51 percent votes to perform a union campaign for 46 days and then have a secret ballot vote. This bill would provide that a union would only have to get 51 percent of the first vote to unionize, leaving no campaign for either side of the issue. This bill would make US businesses significantly less competitive and unsuspecting small businesses subject to unionization

Discouraging a Cap & Trade system (to reduce greenhouse gases) at the Local and State level.

Clean air and a sound environment are vital to all Minnesotans and especially to the business community. But it is misguided and unrealistic to believe that Minnesota can singularly reduce greenhouse gases without such a policy having a significant impact on the livelihood of all Minnesotans. Any programs designed to lower greenhouse gas emissions must be addressed on a national and international level.

Reduced Cost of Health Care by:

Creating a Health Care Marketplace

Identifying initiatives that will address the cost and quality of health care, whereas implementing measurements for price and quality, rewarding for value not volume. Stabilizing insurance rates through eliminating regulations, reforming medical malpractice laws, and providing comparable coverage and tax fairness.

Pro Business Government Officials by:

Identifying, cultivating and encouraging pro business individuals seeking office within the government.

Providing opinions, statistics and other information that supports the pro business model to members, non members, future and existing government officials.
